How Australian Payroll Works

  • Gross Pay: (Normal hours × rate) + (Overtime × rate × multiplier) + (Weekend × rate × multiplier) + (Public holiday × rate × multiplier)
  • PAYG Withholding: Progressive tax withheld by your employer based on ATO weekly tax tables
  • Superannuation: 12% of ordinary time earnings (2025-26 rate), paid by your employer on top of your salary
  • Leave Loading: Typically 17.5% on top of 4 weeks annual leave base pay
  • Net Pay: Gross pay minus PAYG withholding = what hits your bank account

The Superannuation Guarantee rate increased to 12% from 1 July 2025. Penalty rates vary by award and industry -- check your applicable Modern Award for exact multipliers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is PAYG withholding calculated in Australia?

PAYG (Pay As You Go) withholding is calculated using ATO tax tables based on your gross pay, tax-free threshold claim, and pay frequency. Your employer deducts this amount and sends it to the ATO on your behalf.

What is the superannuation guarantee rate in 2025-26?

The Superannuation Guarantee rate for 2025-26 is 12% of your Ordinary Time Earnings (OTE). Your employer pays this on top of your salary into your nominated super fund.

How are overtime penalty rates calculated?

Under most Australian awards, overtime is paid at time-and-a-half (1.5x) for the first 2-3 hours and double time (2x) thereafter. Saturday rates are typically 1.5x and Sunday rates 2x, though this varies by award.

What is leave loading in Australia?

Leave loading is an extra payment (usually 17.5%) added to your annual leave pay. It compensates for the overtime and penalty rates you would normally earn if working. Not all employees are entitled to it — check your award or agreement.
