How Australian Payroll Works
- Gross Pay: (Normal hours × rate) + (Overtime × rate × multiplier) + (Weekend × rate × multiplier) + (Public holiday × rate × multiplier)
- PAYG Withholding: Progressive tax withheld by your employer based on ATO weekly tax tables
- Superannuation: 12% of ordinary time earnings (2025-26 rate), paid by your employer on top of your salary
- Leave Loading: Typically 17.5% on top of 4 weeks annual leave base pay
- Net Pay: Gross pay minus PAYG withholding = what hits your bank account
The Superannuation Guarantee rate increased to 12% from 1 July 2025. Penalty rates vary by award and industry -- check your applicable Modern Award for exact multipliers.
