How It Works

This calculator models the unit economics of running a school or event photography SaaS — the kind of platform where photographers shoot all day, upload to a central system, and parents browse and order through online galleries.

Infrastructure is dominated by three line items: Cloudflare R2 for image storage, Cloudflare CDN for delivery (which is free of egress charges — the key advantage), and a VPS to run the application backend and database. The calculator computes R2 spend from your upload volume, retention period, and the read traffic from gallery visitors.

Pricing is derived bottom-up from your costs: figure out the cost per photographer per month, divide by (1 − target margin) to get the price they should pay. Three subscription tiers are auto-generated around that target — a Starter at break-even +20%, a Professional at the target margin, and a Studio at 1.5× the target.

Break-even is the photographer count where total subscription revenue exactly covers infrastructure plus your monthly overhead. This is the headline number — get there and the business is self-sustaining.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Cloudflare R2 egress free?

When you serve files from R2 through the Cloudflare CDN (the default), R2 charges $0 for egress regardless of volume. AWS S3 charges $0.09/GB and Backblaze B2 charges $0.01/GB — for a photography platform serving hundreds of GB per month, this is the single biggest cost difference between providers.

What CDN cache hit rate is realistic?

For an image-heavy gallery where parents browse the same set of photos repeatedly during a buying window, 80-95% is achievable. Set conservatively at 85% for the default. Lower hit rates (50-70%) apply if galleries are constantly being created and the working set is very large.

Does the calculator account for image transformations?

No — it assumes you serve a pre-built thumbnail at 20% of original size. If you use Cloudflare Polish or transform on-the-fly with Cloudflare Images, add ~$5 per 100k stored images and $1 per 1k delivered to your overhead figure.

How accurate are the VPS estimates?

Based on mid-tier Australian and US providers (Vultr, DigitalOcean, Hetzner with overflow). Production tier at $80/mo runs a comfortable workload up to ~100 photographers. Above that you typically split into application + database servers (the $200 split tier).

Why is everything in USD?

Cloudflare R2 and most VPS providers price in USD, and the major source of pricing variability (R2) cannot be quoted accurately in AUD without baking in a fluctuating FX rate. Convert your final figures to AUD at your bank rate at the time you commit to spend.
