How the Retirement Income Calculator Works

Minimum Drawdown Rates

The SIS Regulations require minimum annual withdrawals from account-based pensions. These rates increase with age to ensure funds are drawn down during retirement, not accumulated indefinitely.

Age Pension

The Australian Age Pension is available from age 67 (2026). The amount you receive depends on income and assets tests. The maximum single rate is $1,116.30 per fortnight (March 2026). This calculator uses a fixed amount you specify.

Investment Returns

Returns are applied to the remaining balance after each year's drawdown. A balanced super fund has historically returned around 5-7% p.a. after fees and tax, but past performance does not guarantee future returns.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will $500,000 in super last in retirement?

At the minimum drawdown rate (starting at 4% at age 60), $500,000 would provide $20,000 per year initially, lasting approximately 25-30 years depending on investment returns. Combined with the Age Pension, your total income would be higher.

What is the minimum super drawdown rate in Australia?

Minimum drawdown rates vary by age: 4% for ages 55-64, 5% for 65-74, 6% for 75-79, 7% for 80-84, 9% for 85-89, 11% for 90-94, and 14% for 95+. These are percentages of your account balance at 1 July each year.

Can I get the Age Pension and draw super at the same time?

Yes. Many retirees receive both. Your super pension counts as income under the Age Pension income test, and your super balance counts under the assets test. As your super depletes, your Age Pension may increase.

How much is the full Age Pension in Australia?

The full Age Pension (2025-26) is approximately $1,190 per fortnight for singles ($30,940/year) and $1,794 combined for couples ($46,644/year). Rates are indexed twice yearly in March and September.
